Event Photography: The Grappling Buffalo Grand Opening.
Photographing the grand opening of Boulder's newest jiu jitsu gym.
Since moving to Denver, I have stayed committed (and healthy lol) to jiu jitsu, meeting some amazing people during my time training here. Some people have branched off into other gyms while others have taken the leap into creating their own academies. The greater Denver area has some amazing places to train jiu jitsu and now Boulder has an incredible gym too, helmed by one of the area's top talents, Peter Yozell. I met Peter at Levearge Jiu Jitsu a few years ago and have had the pleasure to train with him and watch him compete at the highest levels since then.
Recently, I received the news that Peter decided to open his own nogi gym, The Grappling Buffalo, in Boulder, Colorado. He immediately hired me to capture some photos of the grand opening event. Peter provided me a few names to capture and then gave me free range to cover the overall vibe of the day. This was a particularly fun event for me because I was able to split my time between capturing photos and getting a few rounds in myself. It isn't often that paid gigs are like this so I was particularly happy for the opportunity to stay long enough to do the job and have some fun too. I love the grappling community here and watching people grow and expand said community is great to be a part of and to witness in real time. Capturing moments like this is historical for the grappling communities here.
The space is beautifully designed with a partial cage wall, a lounge area, shower, restrooms, and kitchen area. The location is fantastic too; just far enough from the busier areas of Boulder yet close enough to be a short drive or quick ride along the bus route that stops directly in front of the gym. Having a highly decorated and experienced grappler like Peter is sure to elevate Boulder's burgeoning grappling community and I am looking forward to all of their success at The Grappling Buffalo.
